TALLAHASSEE, Florida (WCTV) – New housing options could be coming to the capital.

A land use change, on the table at the city commission’s meeting on Wednesday, could transform former hotels and motels into new condominiums in Tallahassee.

Two hotels in Tallahassee have asked the city to remodel their rooms.

According to the agenda item, this new regulation could allow hotels or motels to be converted into one-bedroom studios or efficiency apartments.

The Days Inn at 3100 Apalachee Parkway near the intersection with Capital Circle is the first.

The developer hopes to convert 181 rooms into 181 micro-residential units.

The second hotel is the University Inn and Suites at 691 West Tennessee Street, adjacent to the FSU campus.

There are 56 hotel units in this building and the applicant hopes to create studio apartments there.

Mayor Dailey says it’s a creative idea.

“I think this is a great opportunity to add more units to our community. Look, not everyone wants to buy a single family home, but giving them the opportunity to buy a condo might be perfect, ”said Dailey.

The agenda item also shows that this has been successfully done in other communities.

Converted building locations are in California, Colorado, Atlanta, and Albuquerque.

Dailey says one pressure in Tallahassee is a shortage of housing.

Speakers involved in the project said that these units will be standard market housing for workers.

Updates on this initiative will be made available as soon as we receive them.
