BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The City of Beckley is working with local auto clubs to plan a full season of community car cruises and auto shows.

Last summer, the car cruises served as a community event where local car enthusiasts drove through the neighborhoods and put on a mobile show.

Beckley Events’ Jill Moorefield said the cruises were designed to be COVID safe and they are excited to be doing the same again this year.

“Our county is in the red, so people still have to quarantine and stay in their homes. So we’ve picked four different neighborhoods to go to.”

The city is planning four different cruises, the first of which is scheduled for April 10 and three more for May. Auto clubs include Shade Tree, Smooth Impressions, AACA, and others.

Stephanie French, Shade Tree’s treasurer and secretary, says that in addition to neighborhood cruises, her auto club also has a full season of regular auto shows planned.

“All of our shows go to a charity,” said French. “And we have a big season this year, we have a lot of charities that we will donate to. St. Jude’s, the Raleigh County Fire Department, the Prevention Coalition’s Blessing Box project. “

The Great Race, which was canceled last year, will also take place in Beckley this summer. It returns to the area in June and will feature cars from across the nation.

“We can also host the Great Race on June 25th this summer. We’ll have some local cars, but over 100 will also come from all over the country.”

All city cruises operate between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM and start at 4:30 PM

The schedule for the cruises is as follows:

April 10th – Bowling addition. Stand in the Nazarene Church.

May 8 – McLean Addition / Harper. Stand at the Cross Point Church.

May 22nd – Rhododendron cruise. Queue at the airport.

May 29th – Cruise & Concerts. Stand in Park Middle School.
