MITCHELL — It was 27 up, 27 down for the Mitchell High School boys tennis team on Friday afternoon at Hitchcock Park.

The Kernels swept its foes from Huron, Madison and Vermillion — each by scores of 9-0 — to improve to 9-1 on the season in the home quadrangular on a breezy day of tennis. Since a 5-4 dual loss to Yankton in the season-opening triangular on April 1, the Kernels have won nine straight duals and outscored opponents 73-9 in match victories.

Mitchell’s doubles teams were nearly perfect in the matches against the Bulldogs and Tanagers, allowing just two games to be won by opponents and blanking Vermillion 10-0 in each match. Similarly, Aidan Patrick did not allow a single game to be won against him in singles action on the day, with three 10-0 wins in the per set format.

Mitchell’s Josh Grosdidier won the day’s closest match, a tiebreak victory over Huron’s Lah Doh Soe at No. 5 singles by a score of 10-9(5). Three wins for the no. 3 doubles pairing of Jack Vermuelen and Connor Thelen improved the pair’s season record to 10-0. At No. 6 singles, freshman Luke Jerke improved to 10-0 on the season as well with three victories.

Mitchell was slated to travel Monday, April 25, to Aberdeen for a triangular with Aberdeen Central and Sioux Falls Washington. Because of the expected weather conditions, that triangular will now be held at the Huether Family Match Pointe indoor tennis facility in Sioux Falls, with matches starting at 11 am
