As conditions worsened when the snowstorm entered our area on Friday afternoon, drivers who set out to leave town early may have decided to quit and look for somewhere to stay while on the road Storm waiting.

Tony Sliger occupies the desk at the Holiday Inn & Suites near Diamond Jo Casino. In almost three years he worked here, experienced a few winter storms, but never missed a day due to the weather.

“Glacier, blizzard, whatever it is, I’ll be here!”

Before the storm on Friday, the front desk phone would ring.

“We had a handful of preventative calls, people calling to confirm we had rooms in case they needed it. A call or two every 30 minutes or so.”

While storms usually mean “no vacancy” for this hotel, Sliger tells me it’s different this time and he has a theory as to why that is.

“Usually we fill up pretty quickly in a blizzard. But since it started so early in the evening, a lot of people decided to adjust their plans.”
