Mudgee in central west NSW has been ranked in the top 10 emerging destinations in the world according to the travel website Tripadvisor.

The unexpected admiration comes after Tripadvisor published the list on Thursday morning, January 28th. The list includes only two Australian locations, with NSW’s Shoalhaven on the south coast ranked eighth.

How does a place make the list? A Tripadvisor spokesperson told the Mudgee Guardian that this is largely based on the places Tripadvisor users save on their accounts as the places they want to travel to.

“Emerging Destinations show the places where travelers on Tripadvisor” save “the most worldwide,” they said.

“Unlike the other categories that highlight where travelers have been, the emerging list is where they want to go. These are the destinations travelers dreamed of when they were stuck at home all year – and where to go next. “

According to Tripadvisor, the practice of window shopping on vacation increased during the pandemic, making Mudgee one of the most wanted destinations.

“Emerging Destinations recognize the locations where savings on accommodation, restaurants and activities on Tripadvisor have increased the most compared to last year,” said the spokesman.

“Saving is a good indicator of what travelers want to do in the future as opposed to what they have done or are booking now.”

Cara George, CEO of Mudgee Region Tourism (MRT), said the ranking reflects the way the world has changed.

“We get this opportunity to invite people to our region [might be] Overseas or Interstate, and we find they love what they see. So we’re already getting a lot of repeated visits, “she said.

According to Cara, the Mudgee region recorded 47 percent overnight visits in the first fiscal quarter and had the “strongest low season ever”. “It was great to see such a great recovery and recovery,” said Cara.

“I think over the past five years we as an industry have put a lot of work into developing a very strong and mature market target for the world. So our goal has been to be the most popular destination in Australia. And it’s a bold ambition to but it is one that we understand as an industry, as a community, as business people. “
