The construction database TOPHOTELPROJECTS draws a picture of the state of hotel development throughout Portugal, with Lisbon proving to be particularly active.

Our data shows that 42 new hotels with 7,079 rooms are currently being built in Portugal despite the pandemic. We’re taking a closer look at this pipeline – and discussing the country’s top projects.

Portugal’s hotel openings per year

A total of 16 Portuguese products will be launched in 2021, adding 2,120 rooms to the country’s offering. Five of these properties are already in the pre-opening phase.

Another 11 hotels with 1,980 rooms will open their doors in 2022. In addition, seven projects are expected to be completed in 2023, while eight are on the books for 2024 and beyond.

Of the 42 pipeline projects in Portugal, almost 75% will be in the four-star category. The rest falls into the five-star luxury segment.

Growth markets in Portugal

The capital Lisbon will receive 14 new hotels with 2,490 rooms in the coming years, making it by far the fastest growing market in the country.

Not to be overlooked, eight new properties with 1,801 rooms will be put into operation in Porto. Meanwhile, the popular tourist destination Cascais has two ongoing projects and 173 keys.

Top hotel brands expand in Portugal

Meliá Hotels & Resorts tops our list of the country’s most active brands with four hotels and 782 rooms in the pipeline.

Elsewhere, Turim Hotels will increase its national presence by three properties with 339 rooms, and Radisson Red is working on two projects with a total of 568 keys.

Interesting hotel openings in Portugal

Legacy Hotel Cascais, Curio by Hilton Collection will sit in the historic heart of Cascais. Most of the hotel’s 58 rooms have balconies with breathtaking views of the sea and the inner courtyard. The property also has a lobby bar, two restaurants, a swimming pool, a spa and a fitness center. Thanks to its prime location just 17 miles from Lisbon and with easy access to the city’s business parks, the hotel should appeal to both leisure and business travelers when it opens in the third quarter of 2023.

Hilton Porto Gaia is another hotel from the American hotel giant of the same name and is due to hit the market in the third quarter of 2021. This 194-room hotel is located in the middle of the region’s famous port wine cellars and will include a restaurant, lobby bar and destination bar with panoramic views of the historic city of Porto and the Douro River, as well as a spa with indoor pool with dynamic water jets, sauna, Turkish bath and gym . The program is also ideal for hosting events with an auditorium with 356 seats and 1,688 m² of meeting space, including a 735 m² ballroom.

We conclude our list of notable product launches with another Hilton Worldwide property due to open in the third quarter of 2021. Sé Catedral Hotel Porto, Hilton tapestry collection will be located in one of the best neighborhoods in Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of Porto’s main attractions, including the 12th-century Sé Cathedral, Clérigos Tower and Livraria Lello, are just a 10-minute walk from the 77-room hotel. The São Bento train station and Francisco Sá are within easy reach of Carneiro International Airport.
