Surrey, BC , April 23, 2021 / CNW / – The following is a statement from Brian SauvĂ©, President of the National Police Federation, regarding the BC RCMP’s enforcement of recently announced travel restrictions in the provinces:

“On behalf of our nearly 7,000 members here in BC, we remain concerned about the safety and ongoing ambiguity of the province’s proposed police enforcement of the COVID-19-related travel ban in BC

We understand the province’s need to protect communities in this ongoing and protracted pandemic. As we said earlier this week, many of our members are opposed to this proposal because of the risk of public backlash, legal ambiguity, exposure and possible infection due to the continued slow roll-out of vaccination for police in the province.

We applaud Minister Farnworth’s commitment to fund the additional training, resources and equipment required to achieve this, but – essentially – we want to be part of that decision and have a seat at the table as this Order is drawn up.

As workers’ representatives of the RCMP members in this province, we ask and expect to be engaged. “

About the National Police Federation:

The National Police Federation (NPF) has been certified to represent ~ 20,000 RCMP members operating in various countries Canada and internationally in summer 2019. The NPF is the largest police working relationship organization in Canada;; the second largest in North America and is the first independent national association to represent RCMP members.

The NPF focuses on improving public safety in Canada by negotiating the very first collective agreement for RCMP officials and by increasing the resources, equipment, training and other support for our members who have been underfunded for far too long. Better resources and support for the RCMP will improve the safety and quality of life of the communities in the communities in which we serve, large and small Canada.
