MANILA – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) stands ready to assist Filipino Overseas Workers (OFWs) who may be affected by Hong Kong’s travel restrictions.

OWWA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said in a Laging Handa Presser Thursday that they are monitoring the situation with a view to the possibility of stranding Filipino workers.

“We are now monitoring the airports for possible victims,” he said at the briefing in Laging Handa.

Cacdac added that support is given to all OFWs, regardless of whether they are agency hired or Balik Manggagawa.

“Although the recruitment agencies have generally been cooperative and have resources to help out their stranded OFWs who are unable to continue the flight, among other things. But there are also returnees who do not have an agency. We’ll probably help them. If there is no shelter in the National Capital Region (NCR) we will help them provide shelter, food, shelter and transportation, ”added Cacdac.

On Wednesday, Hong Kong announced the 2019 (Covid-19) variant of Omicron in the face of rising cases of coronavirus disease.

The majority of Filipinos working in China’s semi-autonomous region are domestic workers. (PNA)
