DETOUR – Pickford drove to his second straight win in the opening week of the season and passed DeTour 74-32 in girls’ basketball at the Eastern UP Conference Thursday night.

Nine players scored points for the Lady Panthers, led by Kennedy Guilds 23. Madison Thurmes got 14 points and Lizzie Storey 12 points for the Panthers (2-0 overall and EUPC).

Pickford took a 24-5 lead in the first quarter and increased the lead to 41-15 at halftime.

Lily Plowman finished with 11 points and Grace Krzycki had nine points for the Raiders.

Pickford will host Brimley on February 18, while DeTour will have a home game against Mid Peninsula this Saturday.

Newberry 50, Rudyard 45

Newberry ended the week with a double street win between street and EUP conference against Rudyard on Thursday evening.

Katie Rahilly led Newberry with the top 21 points. Bailey Zellar scored eight points while Brenna Pavey and Jen Dzelak each had six points for the Indians (1-2 total, 1-1 EUPC).

Chesney Molina scored 18 points while Tristan Smith and Brooklyn Besteman added nine points each for the Bulldogs (1-2 total, 1-1 EUPC). Emily Kopitz came off the bench to add five points and Jerzie Belleville had four points to complete the Bulldogs’ score.

The game was tied at half-time at 25 o’clock. Newberry took the lead 35-32 in the third quarter and finished their first win in the fourth quarter.

“I’m not sure if the three games in four days took a toll on us but we didn’t get to play,” said Rudyard coach Carlos Molina. “I’m taking my hat off Newberry because they played better than us. Hopefully this is a lesson we learn from and get better from here. I was happy with Emily Kopitz, who came off the bank tonight and has proven herself. ”

Rudyard will host Munising on Monday. Newberry has a home game against Cedarville on Tuesday.

Maplewood 48, NMCA 43

Maplewood Baptist defeated the Northern Michigan Christian Academy (NMCA) in a non-conference matchup on Thursday.

Chloe May led Maplewood’s even performance with a double-double of 18 points and 20 rebounds. Halie Miller added 12 points and 10 rebounds while Finley Hudecek slumped 10 points and Aksana Chromy added eight points and four assists.

“Our girls did a good job tonight in all four quarters,” said Maplewood coach Caroline May. “Everyone has contributed and hopefully we can build on this game.”

Engadin 55, Middle Peninsula 45

The Lady Eagles scored an outside conference win against Mid Peninsula Thursday night.

The Engadin returned after a three-point half-time deficit and prevailed against the Wolverines in the second half with 29:16.

Leah French scored 21 points while Tesa Paquin added nine points and Kearra Paquin had eight points for the Eagles.

“We played well tonight, especially since we haven’t had a competition since last March and have lost five seniors,” said Engadin coach Roger French. “Leah French started exactly where she left off in the playoffs, shooting 5 to 7 out of the blue.”

The Engadin will visit Mackinaw City on Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Maplewood 63, NMCA 27

Maplewood Baptist defeated NMCA in a boys basketball game outside of conference Thursday night.

The Black Bears used a 26-2 run in the last 10 minutes of the first half to break up a close game.

Micah Bailey led Maplewood with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Judson Blount added eight points and seven rebounds while Dominic Bonnee and Luke Royer added seven points each.

Joel Dubey led NMCA with 16 points.
