As the coronavirus pandemic calls into question typical vacation experiences in 2021, cruise lines are turning their attention from the sea to the land.

Holland America Line and Princess cruises have put together a number of packages to help you explore Alaska by land this summer. It combines tours, accommodation and sightseeing opportunities for visitors.

“We love Alaska and we love that we can share it with visitors from all over the world,” said Dave McGlothlin, Holland America’s vice president of tour operations.

Cruises on hold

The company currently has stopped all cruises because of the pandemic. The most recent announcement in early January will keep all ships empty through late April, with all Alaska cruises being canceled through mid-May.

Likewise Princess Cruises announced last month that all Alaska cruises have been canceled.

“We share the disappointment of our guests about these canceled trips, especially because we have prepared our ships for our return to service,” said Jan Swartz, President of Princess Cruises. “We understand how much Alaska depends on the cruise industry. We will do all we can to help our business partners and the communities in Alaska.”

Land options

With the possibility that cruise breaks could be extended, Holland America is turning its attention to the land, offering travelers the chance to see the highest mountain in North America. Denali, up close this summer. Their packages include use of Gray Line Alaska, Princess Alaska Lodges, and Westmark Hotels for visitors.

Travelers have the option to book a tour with everything planned in advance or create their own itinerary with hotel and sightseeing options.

“Over the past year, many people have stayed close to their homes. With the reopening of some of these land offerings this summer, we are more ready than ever to see visitors through our doors again,” said McGlothlin. Among the options available:

  • Accompanied tours of six to seven nights with variations between Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali and Kenai
  • Denali Rail tours from one to six nights with up to four nights in Denali National Park
  • The hotel is staying at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel. Travelers choose their own sightseeing tours. Additional accommodations will open after Memorial Day, including the McKinley Chalet Resort in Denali and the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge overlooking the Kenai River
  • One hour cruise to see the face of Portage Glacier

All activities will follow strict health protocols to address COVID-19, which is likely to change in the coming months. The company is committed to following CDC guidelines, which will apply this summer. Do you want more inspiration? Consider
