Pro-Invest and IHG Hotels & Resorts will open Primus Sydney as Australia’s first Kimpton Hotel in October 2021
IHG’s luxury boutique brand has grown rapidly around the world and is finally arriving down under

After years of anticipation, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants will arrive in Australia in 2021. IHG Hotels & Resorts and the Pro-Invest Group plan to convert and reposition the Primus Hotel in Sydney as Kimpton Sydney.

An industry pioneer who first pioneered the boutique concept in the United States in 1981, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is known for providing warm service and creating guest experiences that foster real human connections. Today his playful brand philosophy is celebrated worldwide, achieved through well thought-out perks and amenities, inventive meetings and events, distinctive, design-oriented interiors and lifestyle elements such as the nightly social hour.

As a listed Art Deco revival of 1930s interwar architecture and the history of the former Sydney Water Board Building, the Primus Sydney property almost sings with Kimpton personality. The bold design, iconic red pillars and luxury personality of the boutique will perfectly embody the brand. Once the lobby, guest rooms, and F&B remodel is complete, it will undoubtedly become a brand-defining flagship for the region.

Kimpton Sydney opens this October with 172 unique, design-led rooms and suites, a rooftop swimming pool, conference and event space bathed in natural light, and a range of innovative dining experiences building on Kimpton’s legacy. including a lobby bar, rooftop restaurant and cafe.

The brand’s lifestyle programming? Part of Kimpton’s DNA? is delivered through a variety of free experiences, which can include: a morning kick-start coffee and tea, yoga class, bike rentals, and Kimpton’s legendary social hour Meet locals over free wines. Furry, four-legged friends are welcome too, with Kimpton’s pet-friendly approach and dial-up pet deals (?? If it fits the elevator, come in! ??)

Leanne Harwood, managing director of IHG? Australasia, Japan & Pacific, said, “I can’t tell you how excited we are to finally bring the Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants brand to Australia.” We are very aware of how special the Kimpton brand is and that’s why it was so important to us that we only bring it to market with the right owner and when we have the perfect property to bring it to life. The Primus Sydney property exudes Kimpton character. When we saw it we knew it had to wear the Kimpton badge and we are so glad that Pro-invest agreed and put its full weight behind the brand.

?? We are so proud to have such a great long-term partnership with Pro-invest, which already includes 13 open or pipeline hotels from three IHG brands, and we look forward to continuing this growth together. ??

Jan Smits, Co-CEO at Pro-invest, Such a uniquely beautiful and historic hotel required a brand that would bring the guest experience to life, and since each Kimpton hotel is a hotel in itself, individually designed to blend the environment with the local culture and appeal to the guests Offering authentic hotel and playful experience, we knew it was the right choice.

IHG and Pro-invest have a long partnership that began with the opening of Australia’s first Holiday Inn Express in Macquarie Park, Sydney in 2016. Since then, the portfolio has been expanded to include 7 Holiday Inn Express hotels and together they are expanding the partnership with new brands, with 6 hotels under the Voco, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn Express and now Kimpton brands in preparation.

Kimpton is away from the stereotypical CBD luxury hotel and the trendy downtown location of the hotel in Sydney fits perfectly with Kimpton’s guest profile – the State Theater and Capitol Theater are just a stone’s throw away with the listed QVB retail district, the performing arts centers and the International Convention Center.

The Kimpton brand has grown rapidly around the world in recent years. 73 Kimpton Hotels are now open worldwide and 32 are in the pipeline. Australia is the newest market for the brand and continues its recent growth trajectory with hotels opening all over the world.

IHG Hotels & Resorts currently has 60 hotels in Australasia operating under six brands including InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Voco, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express. Another 35 are in the pipeline, including Kimpton.
