JUNCTION CITY – The Washburn Rural boys, who were only 30-25 at halftime in Junction City, needed a spark to part with hosts Blue Jays, who came fresh from behind after beating Highland Park on on Tuesday.

Jack Bachelor committed.

Bachelor came out hitting three 3-point points in the third quarter, and Jack Hutchinson added one of his own during that period as Rural Junction City left 21:10 over that period and then a 61:42 win on the Street scored.

The win was the second in two nights for Rural, who raced past Topeka High on Thursday, and the Junior Blues improved to 5-1 both overall and in league play.

Bachelor scored all eleven points in the second half, helping to offset Junction City’s crackdown on Joe Berry, the preeminent country dweller. Berry had eight points in the second half after lighting the Blue Jays for 21 points in the first half, including 10 in the first quarter and 11 in the second half.

Berry achieved a season high of 29 points.

Junction City was led by Howard Johnson’s 14 points.

RURAL GIRLS 72, JUNCTION CITY 32

Maybe Washburn Rura, the girls from Thursday’s Topeka High loss, was having a hangover. The girls got off to a slow start. That means defensive.

The Junior Blues scored 17 points in the first quarter on Friday night in Junction City, but gave up 15 when Lucy Rivera and Mellana Davis also scored seven points for the Blue Jays.

Then Rural stepped up their defense, allowing only 18 points over the past three quarters. The Junior Blues prevailed against Junction City 47-12 in the second and third quarters and pulled back.

Brooklyn DeLeye led the indictment in the middle two quarters, scoring 22 of their 27 game-strong points in both periods. Zoe Canfield scored eight points on two threes in a second quarter and finished the race with 14 points, while Emma Krueger scored nine of her twelve points in the first quarter.

EMPORIA SWEEPS HAYDEN

Hayden’s girls played without the injured star Macy Smith for the first time and struggled to find their offensive rhythm at Emporia on Friday night.

By the time they did it it was too little, too late.

Hayden only scored 15 points in the first three quarters – one more than Emporia in the first quarter alone. The Wildcats fell 30-10 at halftime and 43-15 in the fourth quarter before breaking out for 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Emporia’s offense came from beyond the arch when Macey Adams buried four 3-pointers and Gracie Gilpin connected three. Gilpin finished the game with 17 points and Adams 14.

Hayden (4-4, 4-4) was led by Carly Stuke’s 15 points, 10 of which came in the closing stages when Emporia fingered them and forced the other wildcats to improve.

The boys from Emporia gave Hayden their fifth straight defeat, scooping a 44:37 win.
