San Diego beach companies see a surge in travel ahead of the July 4th weekend. And while it’s a welcome sight to see this recovery happen, companies, especially in the hospitality industry, are grappling with a labor shortage.

“I can’t think of a better place to work than here,” says Will Cherashore, General Manager of the Bahia Resort Hotel.

The surge in tourism brings relief to many businesses hoping to recover from the pandemic.

“We’re sold out here for the weekend of July 4th, only a few rooms left, and we expect the occupancy rate to be around 95% for the month of July,” said Cherashore.

Cherashore said they were maxed out this weekend, and while that’s a good thing, the hotel is still working to recover as the pandemic has affected the winter months.

The hotel is one of many in the hospitality industry seeking food and beverage, housekeeping, security and maintenance personnel. While Bahia Resort says it has been able to bring back permanent staff, there are jobs and with it the desire to travel.

“We’re here to enjoy the weather, scenery and atmosphere,” said Jordan Copeland, who is visiting from Colorado.

Visitors like Copeland said they look forward to doing more now after the restrictions are lifted in San Diego.

“It just seems so much more open. Obviously, people are ready to go out and not necessarily socially distant. We’re back to normal in a way,” said Copeland.
