San Marcos Mayoress Jane Hughson signed a statement on the local state of disaster on February 13 due to winter rainfall expected later that day and throughout the weekend Road conditions increasingly dangerous.

According to a press release, the declaration is valid for the next seven days unless it is extended. It can also end earlier if road conditions improve.

The city recommends the public to stay away from roads where possible or to be extremely careful when travel is required. The treatment of roads with de-icing solutions and sand by the city and Texas Department of Transportation’s crews has had limited impact on improving road conditions, which are still dangerous.

San Marcos is encouraging churches to virtually broadcast services to their parishes or to cancel for this weekend to reduce traffic.

Residents are also advised to bring pets indoors and provide warm, solid shelter for outdoor animals that will protect them from wind and rain. Weather concerns about the animals should be reported to the San Marcos Police Department using the non-emergency number 512-753-2108.

Resources for those in need are provided by a number of organizations in Hays County, many of which accept donations.
