SEATTLE – With cruises to Alaska resuming for the first time since 2019, Seattle-based Holland America Line’s safety schedule begins with vaccinations.

They are required for passengers departing from Seattle.

Passengers boarding the Nieuw Amsterdam for the first time of the season on Saturday must provide proof of vaccination and undergo COVID screening.

At least on the first cruises, no people under the age of 12 will be on board due to the compulsory vaccination.

The first cruise will also have fewer passengers, with capacity capped at 65%.

“We’re going up and doing a few more after each trip,” said Gus Antorcha, President of Holland America Line.

Antorcha said passengers won’t see many of the changes, like the improved air filter system.

You will find that buffet areas that used to be self-service now have staff distributing food and drinks.

The crew members are vaccinated but still have to wear masks.

There is no masking or distancing requirement for passengers and the conversation continues as usual.

“It should feel absolutely normal,” said Antorcha.

The Nieuw Amsterdam will sail eleven times from Seattle in 2021.

The shipping company plans 46 departures from Seattle on three ships for 2022.
