The Mersing Tourism Association (MTA) plans to organize a qualification program for players in the tourism industry by the end of the month.

His secretary, Ahmad Firdaus Shaik Omar, said the program will focus on soft skills, prioritizing opportunities to improve customer service and guidelines on standard working practices in the new standard.

“We decided to do this course to fill up our free time during the lockdown.

“Some of the tourism players have started venturing into other businesses, so this course is one of the best ways to help our members,” he said.

Ahmad Firdaus added that the course would take place online with a maximum of 50 participants.

“The course is free of charge.

“Right now we are discussing the topics and curricula that we can cover and share during class.

“There are members of MTA who have the skills and certification to conduct such online courses and we use this to share the benefits with other tourism players,” he added.

Ahmad Firdaus said similar courses have been held with the Eastern Corridor Economic Region (ECER) in the past.

“This time around, we’re doing things ourselves to improve so that after the motion control order is lifted, we can continue to provide our services as usual,” he added.

Jom Ronda Pulau tour operator Murni Saderi, 35, said it started selling groceries online for revenue during the lockdown.

“I used to sell filled tofu online during Ramadan, but since the MCO was introduced it has become my main income.

“So far, the support has been positive and some of my clients are the people I’ve taken island hopping trips in the past,” she said.
