CLEVELAND, Ohio – Only seven hotels have been approved for an extended-hours waiver to serve alcohol until 4 am during this month’s NBA All-Star Weekend.

A representative for the city said the limited number of approvals was done out of an abundance of caution to protect residents and visitors coming in for the festivities.

Approved venues:

InterContinental Cleveland9801 Carnegie Ave.

Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic8650 Euclid Ave.

Hilton Downtown100 Lakeside Ave.

Hotel Indigo651 Huron Rd.

When a major event is held in Cleveland, businesses may apply to stay open later to serve alcohol. The law was enacted prior to the Republican National Convention in 2016 and also was open for the Major League All-Star Game in 2019. Dozens of bars and restaurants applied for, and were granted, the waiver during baseball’s All-Star festivities. The ultimate decision lies with the Ohio Division of Liquor Control.

But this time, the waiver was limited to the hotels.

The city of Cleveland reviewed 87 applications for All-Star Weekend, which is Friday, Feb. 18, through Sunday, Feb. 20. It includes multiple games at the Wolstein Center and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, where the All-Star Game is set to be played Feb 20.

In a release, the city said the decision was made for “optimal public safety.”

Mayor Bibb’s cabinet and the Covid-19 Task Force recommended the seven hotels to the Division of Liquor Control for the waiver. The decision also was discussed with the department of public safety and chief of police, a city representative said.
