DUBLIN – ()–The “The Accommodation Industry in South Africa 2020” Report was added ResearchAndMarkets.com Offer.

This lodging industry report provides information about the size and state of the sector and the factors influencing it, including the coronavirus crisis, travel and tourism statistics and trends, and corporate actions.

There are profiles of 39 companies including Marriott International, the owner of Protea Hotels, which has announced that it will no longer accept some well-known South African hotels, big companies like Sun International and Tsogo Sun, Morocco-based Onomo, which is expanding its business operate footprint on the African continent and small players like the Cradle Boutique Hotel.

The accommodation industry:

The tourism sector accounted for around 709,000 jobs in 2019. Accommodation income increased by over 2% in 2019 despite a decline in international tourists. Even before the coronavirus pandemic, the South African travel and tourism industry was facing challenges due to a weak economy, competition from neighboring countries, security issues and the water crisis.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns in most countries, 2020 will have devastating consequences for the travel, tourism and accommodation sectors. Massive layoffs and consolidations in the industry are happening as outbound travel and travel between provinces cease and the industry effectively closes.

Travel trends and challenges:

South Africa is a popular destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and events. Travelers combining leisure and business travel are a growing market. Wellness and medical tourism are just as popular as township and sports tourism. The government has put austerity measures in place, resulting in less travel for government employees.

The quality of infrastructure and road networks, especially in rural areas, affects tourism growth, while load shedding affects tourism and the day-to-day operation of accommodation providers. The cancellation of international and domestic routes by South African Airways reduced the demand for accommodation.

Coronavirus effects:

The number of international tourist arrivals is expected to decrease by 58% to 78% in 2020. A recent survey found that a large percentage of tourist accommodation did not believe they could survive the pandemic.

Significant cuts have already taken place. Many accommodation providers make bookings when the tourism industry reopens.
