Stray bullets hit and killed the mother of a Navy midshipman while she was sitting on a hotel terrace in Annapolis, Maryland shortly after midnight on Tuesday, police said.

Michelle Cummings, 57, of Houston, was sitting on the terrace of the Graduate Hotel on West Street with her husband and another couple around 12:20 p.m. when she was hit by bullets, police said. The hotel is less than 1 mile from the United States Naval Academy and Maryland State House.

Medics tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the hotel, police said.

Police Chief Edward Jackson said Cummings had been shot more than once. He said his department believed the gunshots came from gunshots on Pleasant Street.

Cummings and her husband had just brought their son to Annapolis to study at the Naval Academy, Jackson said. The son is a soccer candidate at the school, he said.

“What turned out to be a solemn occasion … turned into a tragic event,” said Jackson.

Detectives ask anyone with information to call 410-260-3439 or call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP and give an anonymous tip.

“Introduce yourself. We’re after you, “said Jackson.
