CEDAR RAPIDS – Cedar Rapids police have identified the man who was stabbed to death in a hotel room.

According to police, 33-year-old Victor Huerta and 39-year-old Victoriano Dias-Barrera had an argument in a room at the Residence Inn, 1900 Dodge Road NE. The argument escalated when Dias-Barrera armed himself with a knife and stabbed Huerta once in the chest.

Court documents indicate that the stab wound occurred on Sunday and the police responded to the hotel shortly after midnight on Monday morning. First responders tried to help Huerta, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dias-Barrera was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He was deliberately armed and attacked with a dangerous weapon.

According to the police, several people were in the hotel room at the time of the knife stab. One of them, 29-year-old Anthony Diaz, was wanted for murder in Texas.

First degree murder is a Class A crime in Iowa and carries an automatic life sentence. Authorities have said the fatal stings will continue to be investigated.
