The Maker’s Fire Parfum, one of the six fragrances in the collection

The doer

As co-founders of the global beauty cult brand Fresh, Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg certainly know a thing or two about fragrances. Their Sugar Lemon, Honeysuckle and other fragrances for the line are legendary.

Their most recent foray as a hotelier took them all in a new direction. The duo is behind it The doer, a chic boutique hotel in Hudson, New York that will win over the jaded traveler. It consists of 11 rooms, has a cafe and a destination restaurant, and features vintage pieces and art from local and international artisans. It’s as stylish and fabulous as Lev and Alina themselves.

Now they are returning to their roots with a collection of six gender-neutral fragrances that are meant to evoke the experience of staying in a great hotel. One is better than the other: Stag is rich and clean with its notes of grapefruit and incense, Fire is smoky with its tobacco accord, Naked is light and romantic, and I could go on.

Instead, I’ll let Lev do the talking. My last interview with him follows:

After several years in the beauty business and as the founder of Fresh, which has become and is a cult beauty brand, why did you decide to found a hotel?

Alina and I love to travel and we have been fortunate to visit places all over the world. With innate curiosity and passion for creating, we have recognized for many years that there are spaces in the hotel industry. We have always loved and valued design, we wanted to share our sensitivity and our unique point of view with the world. Hospitality gives us the opportunity to create special experiences that develop into a lifestyle brand.

What is the concept of the property? What are you trying to achieve

To create an inspiring experience for guests in an intimate environment with our pronounced bohemian sensitivity. Our style celebrates different eras of art and design, and we have partnered with global and local artisans and artisans to create a highly curated space. Ultimately, our guest visits the maker, is very moved and wants to take our style home with them. That is why we see ourselves more as a hospitality brand, but rather a lifestyle in which everything can be bought.

The hotel is Hudson. Why did you decide to open there? What do you like about the destination?

Hudson is a very special travel destination. It is rich in various manufacturers from all walks of life – craftsmen, craftsmen, artists, designers. Paired with a city, in a beautiful setting, surrounded by farms and the catskills. It’s also 2 hours from New York City, where you can hop on a train at Penn Station for a scenic drive on the Hudson River without a car. In addition to being near the city, it’s central to the northeast, bordering MA, CT, and near VT.

How did the hotel inspire the perfumes?

The collection is based on The Maker Hotel’s travel fantasies, such as liberation, sensuality, connectedness, love and trust. The power of fragrance is its ability to transport you. Our intention is to reflect the sultry soul of our rooms in scents.

What made you dare to venture back into beauty?

My entry into beauty was driven by my passion for fragrances. At Fresh, the focus was always on the fragrance, in order to create a sensual experience with every product.

With The Maker, I had the opportunity to imagine fragrances that fit into this new world we have created, which is very different from Fresh. It came full circle allowing me to focus on my initial passion for fragrances that was paired with this new company.

How do The Maker’s fragrances reflect the personality of The Maker Hotel?

These fragrances are very refined, complex, modern and unique. It’s like our rooms. Our guests always take in the various details of the design, try to compare it to a place they have been to on their travels but always say that it is like they have never been before.

Describe the personality of the person who wears each fragrance.

We have inspiration behind each fragrance and envision different characters with each story, but ultimately all of our fragrances are gendered. Any person interested in exploring and wearing any fragrance can. We say that the manufacturer behind every fragrance is the carrier. They make the fragrance come alive and it is so individual.

Speaking of personality, tell me who the Maker Hotel is for? Couples looking for a romantic getaway? Familys?

The Maker has a diverse clientele – for everyone looking for a curated, special experience on their trip. We have couples, families, solo travelers so it attracts a really eclectic mix of guests.

Fall and winter are great times to visit the area. Let us know your perfect weekend this time of year that includes a stay at The Maker.

As for the arts, architecture and interior design, I love Olana, and autumn is the perfect time of year to visit. For art, the school and art granny who mixes art with nature. Of course, there are incredible stores on Warren Street selling furniture and lighting from different eras. And besides The Maker there are some great local eateries including Bartlett House, our sister hotel and the first to venture into hospitality, a bakery and kitchen in nearby Ghent.
