The Glen House

Leslie Brienza

There was a time when the big hotels in New Hampshire’s White Mountains invited the wealthy for stays that lasted an entire summer season. Those days may be long gone, but three hotels – one a survivor and one a reborn version of a 19th century hotel from the 21st century – remain.

All of them have incredible views of the mountain. Washington, the tallest mountain in the northeast at 6,288 feet, is a rugged mountain with broad shoulders that is reputed to have the worst weather in the world.

The Glen House

Start with the new kid on the block, The Glen HouseThis is a stylish and newborn classic of a hotel, a subtle yet elegant and eco-friendly hotel. It may be new, but it has deep ancestral roots as it is the fifth such property on the site, which has been called The Glen House since 1852 when tourists began to visit the top of the mountain. Washington by horse and carriage. Owned by the mountain. The Washington Summit Road Company (MWSRC) is located near the base of the mountain. Washington Auto Road, which the family-run MWSRC has operated since 1906, is the same street as the ubiquitous “This Car Climbed Mt. Washington” bumper sticker.

The dog-friendly hotel with 68 rooms offers a fantastic view of the mountains. The heart of the property is an inviting large room with floor-to-ceiling windows. It extends from the lobby to a sitting area and the Notch Grille, which serves well-prepared home-style meals. The adjoining bar and outdoor patio with a fire pit are ideal spots to enjoy a local brew and take in panoramic views of the mountain. Washington after a day outdoors. There is also an indoor saltwater pool to relax your muscles after a day of skiing. Across the street from the hotel is the Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, with bike rentals and kayaking trips outside the hotel. It is the beginning of an extensive network of hiking and biking trails in the vicinity of the hotel. It’s the perfect base for active travelers and for those looking to take a dramatic drive to the top of New England’s most famous peak.

Omni Mt. Washington Hotel

The Widow of the White Mountains who Omni Mount Washington Resort was built in 1902, the last of the 22 major hotels to be built in the White Mountains. It was a groundbreaking hotel when it first opened and had hot and cold running water in every room. It was noteworthy that there was electricity that was ceremoniously turned on by none other than Thomas Edison. In its day it served as a haven for city dwellers seeking mountain air and escaping previous pandemics, including the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic.

Today the hotel retains much of its original size and has public areas that are on par with many European grand hotels. But the property has also just seen a multi-year improvement and expansion of $ 60 million. They added 69 new rooms and suites in a new presidential wing. The rooms are clubby, spacious and have dramatic views of the mountain. Washington. There is also a new club lounge. In the actual hotel, the main dining room and the sun dining room have been renovated and there is a new building, the Rosebrook Lodge, a four-season facility in the mountains that was built on the summit of the Bretton Woods ski area across the street. The two-story lodge made of wood, steel, stone and glass offers both summer guests and skiers a wonderful view of the mountains. It is accessible via the new Bretton Woods Skyway gondola, New Hampshire’s first eight-passenger gondola.

These are improvements and additions to a property that already features the Donald Ross-designed 18-hole Mount Washington golf course, 25,000 square foot spa, year-round canopy tour, and an outdoor pool complex.
