Maverick called space.
The Inspiration4 crew spoke to actor Tom Cruise: Maverick was the callsign of his fighter pilot character in the 1986 film “Top Gun”.
Like the Top Gun character, the four astronauts orbiting the earth have their own callsigns. Jared Isaacman, the billionaire drawing the mission, has flown fighter jets and already had a callsign: Rook, short for rookie. As part of training to fly in orbit, Mr. Isaacman airlifted his fighter jet flight crew members so they could experience high G-forces in sharp turns.
The other three crew members chose their own callsigns. Hayley Arceneaux is Nova, Sian Proctor is Leo and Christopher Sembroski is Hanks.
Since then, there has been no update on the movie’s progress or when Mr. Cruise can take off. But he will return to the cockpit a sequel called “Top Gun: Maverick”, is now expected to be published in May 2022.
