Srinagar: Amid the resurgence of Covid-19 positive cases across India, valley hoteliers and houseboat owners are facing mass cancellation of hotel bookings for the summer season.

Manzoor Pakhtoon, a tour operator, said the bulk of advance bookings for the summer will be canceled amid a spike in Covid-19 cases.

“The valley is experiencing an enormous influx of tourism, and reservations were made for the summer until the end of May. However, given the growing number of Covid-19 positive cases in the country, previous bookings are being canceled, ”he said.

Houseboat Association secretary Abdul Rasheed said the majority of their advance bookings for the summer season are being canceled while tourists already in the valley are dropping their trip.

“More than 80 percent of houseboats are now empty and there are no new bookings given the growing COVID-19 positive cases in the country,” Rasheed said.

“With new weekend lockdowns in different parts of the country, tourists are hesitant to travel with Covid. We make sure that the tourists when they visit us follow the COVID-19 SOPs, but the fear is there, ”he said.

Meanwhile, a senior floriculture official said gardens and parks would remain open under the Covid-19 sops and guidelines already set to attract tourists.
