Trinity Catholic student center Rose Gravel hit a game high of 20 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, and freshman guard Delany Baker poured 20 points to go with 18 boards to beat the Celtics to a 63-37 win over Vanguard on Friday night respectively.

The win improved Trinity Catholic, who has only one senior, to 8-2 that season.

“We’re extremely young and I would say 90 percent of our points this year come from freshmen and sophomores,” said third year Celtics coach Matt Moyer. “It’s about adaptations that come from middle school where the girls come from different backgrounds. One thing we teach every day is that we work together and win together and break every time we break up a mess we with the family. That’s how I grew up and these girls really bought their way. We love each other on and off the floor. “

The loss made up for Vanguard’s record at 4-4.

“We played hard and fought to the end,” said Knights coach Terrance Lewis. “We never give up or give in regardless of the score.”

Trinity Catholic started the game strong with Gravel scoring the first seven points, all in the suit, while Baker hit the basket with a drive and took a free throw to give the Celtics 14-2 lead in the middle of the first period.

The vanguard rallied when top guard Jadah Kingcade, who had 11 points, turned in consecutive 3-pointers to move the Knights within six points.

Trinity Catholic student Heaven Sanders knocked over a jumper and Gravel had a pair of rebound baskets to put the Celtics at 8:10 pm before the second quarter.

Vanguard found an offensive rhythm as junior Jyla Gunsby scored seven of her team-high 14 points and Diana Gegaj added a bucket to pull the Knights within 23-22 with 2:55 remaining in the second period.

Trinity Catholic responded with a 7-0 run as Sanders buried a 3-pointer, Baker made a pair of free throws, and Dasanni Bentley took a jump shot to give the Celtics a 30-22 lead in the half.

Vanguard went ice cold and Trinity Catholic took advantage when Micaela Gomez knocked down a 3-pointer and Baker torched the nets with five 3-pointers from the right corner to give the Celtics a commanding 3:10 41-22 lead procure leave in the third quarter.

The Knights Rain Smith found the behind-the-arc range for a 3-pointer for Vanguard’s only points of the period as they were 50-25 in the last eight minutes.

Trinity Catholic’s Kieley Bateman got hot in the final quarter, scoring eight of their nine points and Gomez drilled a 3-pointer from the tip of the key as the Class 3A Celtics drove to victory.

“These kids are great and they deserve the credit,” said Moyer. “We do a lot on and off the pitch and we’re growing as a family. We’re young, we don’t go out and I love these kids.”

Trinity Catholic is back on the hardwood with a game in West Port next Friday. Class 5A Vanguard is on Monday evening at the district opponent Leesburg.
