KINGSFORD, me. (WLUC) – The UP is expected to have one of its busiest tourism years.

Tom Nemacheck, executive director of Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation, said summer travel reservations and planning for the UP are one of the highest in years.

“It’s more about inquiries now than filling out, and when we see a huge increase in inquiries we know what that means for the coming summer,” he said.

Requests that began as early as the end of December.

“The amount of web traffic we see for vacation planning is extremely high,” said Nemacheck.

Sault St. Marie, Mackinac Island, Porcupine Mountains, Keweenaw, and the Copper Harbor are some of the most haunted spots, Nemacheck said, but much of the planning has to do with attractions like pictured rocks, waterfalls, coastlines and beaches, and activities.

“We see a lot of people starting to explore hiking and cycling – both road cycling and mountain biking, we see kayaking, canoeing. Lots of the traditional outdoor things they do at the UP, ”he said.

And for accommodation, nothing is full yet, but if you are planning on camping, the campsites on the other side of the UP fill up quickly.

Reservations began back in February, according to Lake Linden Campground, and the campsite will open for the season next week to accommodate the high volume of reservations.

That said, reservations shouldn’t be a last-minute task.

“If you have a certain type of property that you would like to stay in, we would just say once you have your dates, take a look at the property and reserve it.”

Nemacheck said planning for the fall has also started.
