Dubai: Away from the crowds – this is what UAE nationals who choose a vacation destination prefer these days. Or at least 48 percent of those who took a recent survey.

“We anticipate that getaways in the mountains, in the country or in remote beach resorts will be the most popular travel trends in the United Arab Emirates,” said Rehab Mansoor, general manager at Rehlaty, a unit of dnata Travel. This is “in addition to targets that have improved health and safety measures in place to provide additional security.”

No wonder, given recent trends, the Maldives has been viewed as a top haven for Emiratis who took a hiatus in 2020 despite the pandemic forcing major changes to travel plans. This year another island destination, Seychelles, is giving the Maldives an uphill battle when it comes to preferences.

“The Seychelles, along with the islands of the Maldives and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, have always been a popular destination for UAE nationals,” said Mansoor. “We anticipate the trend of Maldives travel as a popular vacation option to continue through 2021 and beyond as it becomes even more family-friendly with the expansion and opening of new resorts and facilities.”

Special treats

Emirates airline is offering special prices on flights to Maldives during the Eid vacation. The tariffs start at Dh 3,495 in Economy and Dh 8,555 in Business.

Offer valid for bookings made today through April 25th for trips through July 31st. Travelers can also plan a short break in the Maldives with Emirates Holidays, from Dh 4,389 per person for a three-night package in a four-star hotel.

Emirates currently offers 28 weekly flights to the Maldives. “The Maldives are an incredibly popular destination for travelers from the UAE for a weekend break or a longer vacation with short flight times, idyllic weather, crystal clear waters and pristine beaches,” the airline said in a statement.

Regional options

Not only exotic tropical islands are in demand. Morocco is also fast becoming a favorite for the UAE’s travel-loving population. “We have seen bookings to Morocco, with itineraries covering the vibrant cities of Marrakech and Casablanca, and incredible Chefchaouen, famous for the distinctive, blue-washed buildings of the old town,” said Mansoor.

Rehlaty saw an increase in summer travel inquiries, with customers particularly interested in travel updates for Bali, Thailand and Greece.

Staycations don’t go away

Meanwhile, stays continued to be a top option for UAE residents. According to Rehlaty’s 2020 travel intent survey, 57 percent of UAE nationals wanted to experience more visits to the UAE again this year.

“Customers have seen more than ever in the Emirates, including the incredible 5-star luxury resorts that particularly offer private pool villas in Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah,” said Mansoor.

Open

“When it comes to opening destinations, we are guided by governments and flight availability,” said Mansoor. As travelers continue to expect improved cleaning protocols, safety precautions, flexible cancellation options, and timely trip updates, technology plays a critical role.

“The UAE national community refers to us online for travel restriction inquiries and future travel inspiration. Today, 90 percent of our bookings are generated on social media,” said Mansoor. “As a result, we have a much better view of what customers like or want because we monitor approvals and mentions.”
