In order to support the health of our community, UM employees are strongly advised to avoid travel whenever possible, as recommended by the province.

Federal and provincial health authorities continue to strongly advise against all international and non-essential travel during this public health emergency. Province travel restrictions mandate that anyone who ever leaves Manitoba must go through a 14-day quarantine on their return.

If you have to travel, please contact your dean or supervisor and HR before you travel to better understand the coding of the mandatory quarantine on your return.

HR-CODING OF THE MANDATORY QUARANTING AFTER THE TRIP

  • If you are able to continue working remotely: Employee quarantine hours can be coded as regular time.
  • For important trips and the inability to fully work remotely when returning: Employees may be allowed to code time for a paid COVID vacation. Talk to your dean or supervisor
  • In the case of non-essential travel, if the employee is unable to work remotely or in person, if his role requires it: Employees must use vacation or unpaid leave to cover the mandatory quarantine period.

What about travel insurance?? The travel insurance offered through our full-time service program is fulfilled Not Pandemic exclusion, which means that employees covered by the plan can access all benefits.

howeverEmployees planning a trip should contact Canada Life immediately prior to their trip to ensure that nothing has changed.

CHECKLIST FOR TRAVEL AND TRAVEL PLANNING

If you are a faculty or staff member, before you travel or make travel plans, make sure that:

  • Understand travel restrictions and mandatory quarantine for 14 days after departure: See Government guidelines.
  • Talk to your dean or supervisor and Human Resources before traveling or planning a trip.
  • Understand the implications for your quarantine after the trip and the HR department’s coding at that time, depending on the circumstances:
  • Essential v. Non-essential travel
  • Completely v. Not working entirely from home.
  • Understand the impact of UM travel insurance. Check in with Canada Life before you set off.

In general, people traveling for material or non-essential reasons can have quarantine hours coded as regular time if they are able to continue their remote work in full. If an employee is unable to work completely remotely and the trip is deemed essential, then the time can potentially be encoded as a paid COVID vacation. If the trip is not considered essential and the employee is unable to work remotely or in person if their role so requires, they must use vacation or unpaid leave to cover the mandatory quarantine period.
