In the latest edition of KSAT’s Countless story, we explore an underground shelter at The Haunted Magnolia Hotel in Seguin, Texas.

It has had multiple purposes over the years, but not many people know about it.

The hotel’s historian and owner Erin Ghedi said the basement was first used as the city’s original prison from 1847 to 1852.

After that, it was used to hide from the Native American people.

“When the Comanches started attacking, they needed a place to hide and this was the first hut they had built. So they had the basement completely excavated. The last attack was in 1855 and it was Mrs. Reed who brought down all the women and children, ”said Ghedi.

She went on to say that because of the basement, the people who lived down there survived the civil war.

In 1870, during the reconstruction, union soldiers took over the hotel.

Ten years later, it became a whisper bar during Prohibition.

Ghedi said, “If they were attacked, they would ring a bell and then they would all run through the tunnel.”

The interesting thing about this tunnel is that the city of Seguin doesn’t have to see what’s really deep inside just yet, but the owners and tourists who have spent some time down there say they know at least one person is still there hidden.

“I’m never coming back here because of Isabella. She was starting to get really physical with me … she was pulling my hair, she was throwing stones, “she said.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the story behind this man-made shelter is just fascinating.
