In the further course of the decade, Kakadu will further expand its tourism potential with the recently published Kakadu Tourism Master Plan of the federal government, a ten-year strategy to promote culturally appropriate tourism in the national park. The master plan was developed in consultation with Kakadu’s traditional owners, the board of directors and the tourism industry.

The plan includes a number of proposals to improve access to key tourist sites, upgrade facilities, establish new visitor centers and revitalize Jabiru as a major tourism center with a World Heritage Visitor Center to showcase the significant cultural and natural values of Kakadu.

It also included plans to expand the Kakadu events calendar, which will focus on increasing cultural events with local indigenous operators like the Taste of Kakadu Festival.

“With many international visitors now having access to half-price airfare to Darwin, there has never been a better time to remove Kakadu from the bucket list,” said Rick Allert, chairman of Kakadu Tourism.

“We have had one of our most successful rainy seasons for over a decade, and with added incentives to visit Kakadu this year, we believe the main dry season will be hugely popular.

“A Kakadu vacation is a remarkable cultural experience with over 65,000 years of uninterrupted human habitation in one of Australia’s most dramatic landscapes.

“Bookings are already significantly higher than in previous years. We therefore recommend potential visitors to secure their reservations as soon as possible.”
