Although much of the world closed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, some industries managed not only to survive but also to thrive. One of those who benefited the most from it was golf, as 2020 brought a much-needed jolt to life for the sport.

Although universal shutdowns initially hurt bottom line (March 2021 showed rounds of golf increased by a staggering 45% from March 2020), golfers in the U.S. recorded 14% – or 60 million – more rounds in 2020 than in 2019, according to a National Golf Foundation Study to track the impact of the coronavirus on industry. In particular, weekday gaming and late afternoon course use saw a massive jump in 2020, partly due to the flexibility of the schedule as more people worked remotely, avoided the daily commute, and sought outdoor activities close to their home. Nine-hole games also saw a significant increase as casual golf grew in popularity.
