More than half of Americans (60%) plan to get away this Memorial Day weekend, up more than 66% from last year Cars.com national survey. Despite rising vaccination rates and rising gasoline prices, 89% of travelers drive to their vacation destination, up from 85% on Memorial Day weekend 2020.1

Other insights from Cars.com’s survey of Memorial Day travel include:

  • The car is the star, regardless of rising gasoline prices. Only 12% of respondents say they will fly this year, and almost half (46%) say they want to drive anyway, given the rising cost of the pumps
  • Dosed and ready to travel. More than 40% of Memorial Day travelers are fully vaccinated, 12% are still in the process, and 15% plan to get their shots before they travel. Only 21% plan to travel unvaccinated. 1
  • Lack of availability of rental cars leads to travel in private cars. More than one in three respondents indicated that the limited availability of rental cars had a certain or major influence on the decision to drive a personal vehicle instead of flying to its destination
  • Family meeting? Check. For those leaving the city, most (40%) say they will be visiting family, which signals a long vacation weekend with lots of overdue hugs. Travelers also plan to go to the beach (28%) and visit friends (24%). 1
  • RECEIVE. ME. OUT. Last year’s travelers focused on shorter trips near their home, as opposed to 57% of street fighters planning to travel as far from home as possible this year

“Although the majority of vacationers report full or partial vaccination status, we encourage anyone traveling on Memorial Day weekend to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” Newman added.
