High school hockey is back after a delay due to COVID-19 and the Mona Shores squad has a lot of emotions that are back on the ice.

The intensity of the win was evident when the Sailors drew a 7-2 win over Forest Hills Central in the Saturday morning season opener at Lakeshore Sports Center.

Second year Mona Shores, Trent Benedict, gave the Sailors a big boost in the opening stages and scored three goals in the late first stage to give the Sailors a 3-0 lead in the first break.

“I just felt good about getting the top three,” said Benedict, who finished with three goals and two assists. “(Isaac) Habetler prepared me for the first one and my boys just tossed them forward and I just brought them home.”

Jake Nanna increased the Sailors’ lead to 4-0 in the second half.

Forest Hills finally hit the board in the middle of the second half with two goals five minutes apart to improve the Sailors 4-2 lead.

Nanna responded with his second goal that morning, giving Mona Shores a 5-2 lead.

Ty Langlois gave the Sailors a 6-2 lead early in the third half after Mona Shores successfully killed a penalty.

Langlois ended the classification three minutes after his first record.

Nanna and Langlois each submitted two templates for Mona Shores.

Carter Dethloff stopped 17 shots on goal for the Sailors, including some strange rushes.

“My boys gave me a lot of confidence to score my first three goals and set the tone for the game,” said Dethloff. “Definitely helps a lot with my confidence if we can score first.”

The Sailors now have a 2-0 start and will head to Forest Hills Central on Sunday for a puck drop at Patterson Arena in Grand Rapids at 4pm.
