V.irgin Galactic has made his third trip with the SpaceShipTwo rocket plane to the edge of space. That flight, which took place on May 22nd, was the first to take off from the company’s Spaceport America facility in New Mexico.

Virgin Galactic’s system consists of two parts: the VSS Unity missile ship and the VMS Eve carrier aircraft. Together they traveled to an altitude of approximately 9.5 miles (50,000 feet). Eve then released Unity, who ignited her missile. During Saturday’s flight, Unity reached a speed of Mach 3, increasing it to an altitude of 55.4 miles.

Depending on which definition you use, space begins anywhere from 50 to 76 miles above the surface of the earth. This test flight, piloted by CJ Sturckow and Dave Mackay, is another step towards SpaceShipTwo, which has been granted a commercial reusable license for spacecraft operators by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Once reached, Virgin Galactic aims to take commercial passengers to the edge of space. Saturday’s flight marked the first time a human had reached space New MexicoIt is the third US state to have reached this milestone. The previous two Virgin Galactic space flights took off from Mojave Air and Space Port in California, while the NASA astronauts took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
