RICHMOND, Virginia (WWBT) – As the second round of winter weather hits Virginia Thursday night through Friday morning, the Virginia State Police encourage motorists to be vigilant.

That reminder comes after soldiers responded to 1,220 accidents and 1,414 disabled / stalled vehicles nationwide on Monday and Tuesday.

Soldiers say no weather-related deaths were reported during the first round of winter weather – including the incident on I-95 in Fredericksburg.

Major RC Maxey Jr., assistant director of the Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Field Operations, spoke of the impending winter storm.

“The state police are prepared for this latest round of winter weather. We will have all available soldiers on patrol to respond as quickly as possible to traffic accidents, emergencies and disabled drivers. We’re going to be extending shifts, calling in additional soldiers, and redirecting resources when and where needed, just like we did earlier this week, ”Maxey said.

VSP gives some tips if you need to travel during the storm:

  • Clear the roof, trunk, bonnet and windows of your vehicle – passenger car, SUV, minivan, pickup, commercial vehicle – from snow and ice before you start your journey.
  • Use your headlights – in rain and snow. Virginia law requires your headlights to be on when your windshield wipers are on.
  • Drive according to conditions – slow down and increase the driving distance between the vehicles in front of you. – Always buckle up.
  • Avoid distractions – hang up the phone.
