Rowing cruises for women in Washington in the first race of the NCAA championship

Washington rows under the Montlake Bridge during the 2021 Windermere Cup on May 1, 2021. The Huskies promoted all of their women’s boats to the NCAA Championship final on Friday May 28, 2021 with a dominant performance in the semifinals.

In their heat on Friday morning, the teams had to be one of the first two boats to cross the finish line to reach the semifinals, which will take place at the NCAA Rowing Championships on Saturday.

The Washington Women’s No. 2 crew had no problem getting all of their boats to the semi-finals.

Washington’s first race of the day in Sarasota, Florida was the Uni-Eight race in run two. The defending NCAA champions didn’t disappoint at all. They set a time of 6: 14.32 and took first place with just under seven seconds.

The UW’s Varsity-8 boat hasn’t lost in all season, and that’s in large part for Junior Ella Cossil in the stroke seat. Cossil’s great season earned her the honor of being named Pac-12 Rowing Athlete of the Year in 2021.

A total of four athletes in Washington’s Varsity-8 boat have earned a place on the All Pac-12 team. Those four were, of course, Cossil, Teal Cohen, Nina Castagna, and Skylar Jacobson. While no one on Washington’s second Varsity-8 boat received the All-Pac-12 award, they showed on Friday that they are very good rowers.

Washington’s second Varsity 8 made the first run and did not disappoint. It won the open water race with a time of 6: 25.44 while the boat rowed second place a time of 6: 34.14.

Finishing the day for the huskies was college four. Washington’s Uni-Vier boat had the only loss in the Pac-12 championship, so they came out today to prove themselves and avenge that lone loss.

Co-Pac-12 Trainer of the Year, Yasmin Farooq, decided to make some changes to the four boats today, swapping three rowers who rowed in the Pac-12 Championship for Carmen McNamara-Smith, Fiona Shield and Sophia Chaffey out.

Farooq’s move worked.

Washington fought Virgina for most of the race, but in the end the Huskies managed to hold off the Cavaliers. The four boats rowed the fastest time of the day among all four boats at 7:00 a.m., while Virgina rowed a time of 7:02:80 a.m. in second place.

The Huskies finished first in all three races today, which means they will advance to the semi-finals of all events on Saturday morning. The Uni 8 race starts at 5:36 a.m. on the day
