(WDBJ) – The Virginia Department of Transportation warns travelers of the various resources and precautions available during winter weather conditions well into early Monday.

The roads are not pre-treated as the storm is expected to start as rain, which, according to the VDOT, will reduce the effectiveness of anti-ice agents. The potential for high winds has contractors on standby to help with fallen trees, branches and debris.

“Driving tips in winter weather:

· Give crews time to treat roads.

If you have to travel in adverse weather conditions:

· Allow enough time to achieve your goal

· Maintain a safe distance of at least five seconds behind the vehicle in front

· Brake very lightly to keep your tires from sliding on the pavement

· Do not drive past snow plows

· Visit 511Virginia.org for the latest road conditions before you set off. If possible, avoid driving until the precipitation stops and road conditions improve.

· To report dangerous road conditions or to speak to a customer service representative, call the VDOT Customer Service Center at 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623) or visit online at my.vdot.virginia.gov.

· VDOT recently partnered with Waze to add a new feature to the navigation software app that allows users to report in real time during winter weather when a road has not been plowed. It also notifies travelers when they approach a road that has been identified as unploughed by other drivers.
