WAUSAU, Wisconsin (WSAW) – National Travel and Tourism Week kicked off Monday, underscoring that Wisconsin is about to have a busy summer.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism predicts travelers will catch up on missed vacations this summer. They envisage larger groups traveling longer.

The WDT is already recording figures for more than 2 overnight stays that exceed its record-breaking tourism year 2019.

Nick Ockwig of the Wausau / Central Wisconsin Convention & Visitor’s Bureau said with the return of festivals, sporting events, and more, Wausau hopes it will find some resonance from travelers.

“Everyone was cooped up for safety last year for good reasons. But now everyone, you know, it’s kind of revenge for the missed vacation again. So it’s the year of vengeance in the summer of vengeance on those family vacations. We look forward to it and hope to have a lot of visitors here in central Wisconsin, ”said Ockwig.

A recent survey by the American Society of Travel Advisors shows that 87% of Americans plan to travel in the next six months.

While 2020 was a tough year for business and tourism, the WDT reported that 90 million people were still visiting Wisconsin. This summer, the state is hoping for more stable and stronger numbers.

This weeklong promotion follows news from the Department of Natural Resources announcing eased restrictions and capacity increases in the state parks.
