YARMOUTH – Aine Powers is just a newbie but she already plays a huge role in the Yarmouth girls’ lacrosse team.

Powers got their team off to a quick start on Friday, scoring three goals in a row as Yarmouth celebrated Senior Night on Friday with an eighth straight win – 13-5 against Cape Elizabeth.

Powers’ upswing put the Clippers in the lead with Annie Bergeron and Annie Lowenstein each scoring three goals and helping Yarmouth pull out in the second half.

“I love my team so much,” said Powers. “I get so much support and we have so much fun.”

The Capers, who beat Yarmouth in the 2018 Class B final and overtime 2019, took an early lead on a goal from Susie Graham but Powers joined it after a nice move for a defender. Then she finally put Yarmouth (9-1) in the lead with 15:08 in the first half and shot a high shot past goalkeeper Cammy Woods. Just 56 seconds later, she turned a vacant position into a 3-1 advantage.

“(Aine) brought an intense passion for lacrosse,” said Lowenstein. “She plays such a big role. We love to play with her. “

“Aine is unique in the fact that she has so much poise under pressure,” added Yarmouth coach Dorothy Holt. “The higher the pressure, the higher it rises. You’d never know she’s a newbie and she has an amazing supporting cast that gives her confidence. “

After Lowenstein and Greta Frankwicz swapped goals, Bergeron scored for the first time and Anna Thornton added a goal in a vacant position to make the 6-2.

The Capers narrowed their deficit when Graham scored two goals in just over a minute, but Powers set Bergeron up for a goal that sent Yarmouth into halftime with a 7-4 lead.

Katelyn D’Appolonia (two goals, three assists) won the draw in the second half, snapped in and scored an Emma Moll goal. Lowenstein and D’Appolonia then broke it open when each scored twice.

Graham scored her fourth goal to temporarily contain the tide but Bergeron finished Yarmouth again.

Yarmouth goalkeeper Juliet Meas ended the game with six saves.

“We really grew as a team,” said Powers. “To see our offense and defense talk to each other and how it all flows is just amazing.”

Cape Elizabeth (2-8) got six saves apiece from Woods and Elise Branch.

The Capers still believe that despite their record, they will be a factor when the playoffs begin.

“The score may not show it, but we’ve come this far with team energy, team chemistry and mutual support,” said Alex Spark, Cape Elizabeth coach.

“We need all 26 girls to come together and support each other in the playoffs. It will take total team effort. “
