Cliveden House, Berkshire

There are country hotels – and then there is Cliveden. The history of the place is stunning. Queen Victoria came here for tea, Meghan Markle stayed the night before their wedding, and who could forget the Profumo affair scandal?

The 17th-century National Trust house oozes character (think tapestries, chandeliers, paintings, lots of armor, and stone fireplaces), but it’s the modern touches in the suites that add an extra twist to the place. Of course, Cliveden has its own whirlpool suites so you can enjoy the benefits of spa life from the comfort of your own bedroom. Still, the main spa (which also has some pretty spectacular tubs) is worth a visit, even if it’s just a glimpse of that famous, scandalous pool.
