The Corbett Tiger Reserve opened for year-round tourism on Tuesday. Five areas of the reserve, including Garjia, Bijrani, Dhara-Jhirna, Dhela, and Pakhron, were open for day visits throughout the year this afternoon, said Corbett’s director Rahul.

Corbett’s opening sparked great enthusiasm among wildlife lovers with around 50 bookings for the day safaris on the opening day, he said. Opening the reserve to year-round tourism will help people whose livelihoods depend on it, Rahul said.

Corbett’s revenues have been hit hard by the Covid pandemic and a measure like this will help offset the impact, he said. Uttarakhand’s Minister of Forestry and Environment, Harak Singh Rawat, recently announced that the Corbett and Rajaji tiger reserves will be open to tourists all year round.

Wildlife experts opposed the move, saying it was not good for the animals that inhabit the reserves.
