The history
There was originally a pension on the property. When this guest house burned down in 1871, the Kingfield House Hotel was built in its place.
A few decades later, in 1917, the Herbert Grand Hotel was built by Herbert S. Wing, a local lawyer and politician. The hotel opened in 1918. It was one of the most luxurious hotels in Maine at the time. It had in-room telephone services and indoor installations.
For years the hotel was a hotbed of shady activities like prostitution and speakeasy during the prohibition era.
In recent years it has developed into an accommodation option for those who want to ski and snowboard on Sugar Loaf Mountain.

The ghosts
In those years there were many stories that people saw strange things and appearances. These include ghost children, shadow figures, and ghostly women.
People have even reported objects moving in the bar.
Much of the paranormal activity seems to center around room 318. In fact, on the website, the owners refer to the room on the 3rd floor as “the haunted room”.
