Indiana’s restaurants continue to recover from the effects of COVID-19, but hotels continue to face challenges. Patrick Tamm, President and CEO of the Indiana Restaurant & Lodging Association, commended the state’s recovery process during the state officials’s COVID-19 press conference Wednesday.

“Although we are well below pre-pandemic sales, we are significantly better than our national counterparts and by far the number one, if you will, in the Midwest in terms of sales and revenue,” said Tamm.

But he said the industry is far from healthy. According to Tamm, downtown restaurants, many of which are locally owned, find it harder to relax than others. He noted that restaurants are unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels for another year, but hotels will not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.

Still, he said downtown Indianapolis hotels are closing. “There is currently no other market in the country or in the world with conference hotels for groups that need people and employees,” said Tamm.

Tamm credited Indiana’s recovery to consistent compliance with guidelines, centralized vaccination program, and collaboration among state officials, and he blew up other states that were reversing their reopening as cases rose. “A significant number of restaurants and hotels have been completely wiped out by indecisive and inconsistent leadership and government health departments,” said Tamm. “You haven’t seen this once in Indiana state.”

Tamm encouraged Hoosiers to support restaurants in any way they are comfortable, especially in the city center. “Enjoy a stay or find your new favorite vacation at a hotel across Indiana,” he added. “The dunes in northwest Indiana – a fantastic family vacation and couples too. I really want to encourage you to enjoy this part of the state that many people in Indiana don’t even know about. “

Governor Eric Holcomb believed the state’s economic indicators are moving in the right direction, but Indiana can’t sacrifice its health indicators either.
