MANILA, Philippines – Hosting the FIBA ​​Asia Cup Qualifiers will strengthen Clark as the preferred “sports tourism” destination in the Philippines and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

This, according to Manuel R. Gaerlan, President and CEO of the Clark Development Corporation (CDC), is preparing for the basketball tournament, which will take place June 16-20.

The Freeport relies on its experience of hosting the PBA bubble last year. The league hosted their 2020 PBA Philippine Cup in Clark. The games took place at the Angeles University Foundation gym, while the teams were housed at the Quest Hotel.

FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers will use the same bubble approach approved by the Inter Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF).

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is organizing the event after being approved by the IATF on May 6, under IATF Resolution No. 114.

Clark will host three groups: Group A (Philippines, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand), Group B (Chinese Taipei, Japan, Malaysia, China) and Group C (Australia, New Zealand, Guam, Hong Kong).

The participating teams from other countries are expected to arrive on June 13th.

Strict health and safety protocols are in place throughout the hosting of the Games.

CDC has coordinated with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), Metro Clark Local Administrative Units (LGUs), the SBP, the Philippine National Police, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD-R3) and representatives of the venue to ensure the safety of to ensure all participants and stakeholders.

The players, FIBA ​​and SBP officials will be accommodated at the Quest Hotel in Clark, while media staff, supply partners and support staff will be staying at the Lohas Hotel. CDC guest houses are also used by other employees on site.

The AUF Sports and Culture Center will serve as the venue for the games and practice sessions.

According to the CDC’s Tourism Promotion Department, meetings and eye inspections will be held with various committees in the coming days to finalize the plans.

In addition to the PBA and FIBA, other teams and sports organizations have chosen Clark as the venue for their “bubbles”. This includes bubble training from the NLEX Road Warriors and the Philippine National Volleyball Federation. It will also host the 2021 National Swimming Selection Meet and National Trials for Road Events.
