People are traveling to and through Dothan again, businesses are busy and sales tax revenues are high.

April’s sales and use tax report, reflecting March sales, shows the city grossed over $ 8 million, nearly $ 2.4 million more than budget projections and more than $ 1.7 million Dollars more than last April.

Last month’s sales and use tax revenue left the city in total net income of $ 9,544,057 for FY 2021, with five months left to the end of the fiscal year.

In addition, the lodging tax paid to the city government last month was green for the first time in a year. The city raised $ 328,338 in April, which is $ 68,352 more than the budget amount and $ 93,600 more, or 40% more than the amount raised in the same period last year.

Matt Parker, president of the Dothan Chamber of Commerce, said the mix of industries – medical, military, services, retail and manufacturing – should be attributed to the continued economic growth of the Dothan Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

“The sectors hardest hit were in travel and hospitality, with shutdowns and less travel than what started last year,” said Parker. “With the reopening, the introduction of vaccinations, and the general diversity of the industry, we have kept our markets strong.”
