SHUT DOWN

Frontier Texas! is a museum celebrating the Texas Frontier, just a 10-minute walk from the main Abilene Public Library location. You should check it out this summer as Tony Redman from the library will be attending special live reenactments at Frontier Texas this summer! Court.

A short drama will bring the shooting at the Cattlemen’s Exchange to life. Free and public shows begin on Saturday, May 29th at 12:00 noon and continue every Saturday (except June 12th) through July 10th thereafter. Further information can be found on the website abilenevisitors.com/Historic-Saturday-Shootouts.

To learn even more about the Texas Frontier, visit your Abilene Public Library in person or online and check out the many resources we have on the subject.

Well-known history professor Ty Cashion, “A Texas Frontier: The Clear Fork Country and Fort Griffin, 1849-1887” is an exceptionally well-researched work that reveals the truth behind some of the Griffin area’s Texan folklore.

“The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail, 1858-1861” by Glen Sample Ely provides an overview of the Texan antebellum past and the influence the Butterfield Overland Mail had on shaping much of the history of the Texas border.

Bill O’Neal uses extensive images to document the Texas forts, which shaped the landscape and served as posts for officers such as Robert E. Lee and Ranald Mackenzie.

“True Tales of the Texas Frontier” by C. Herndon Williams tells the true stories of fascinating people, reflecting the many perspectives of Texas history. Both e-books can be found through our free Hoopla service.

More information is available online at texashistory.unt.edu/explore/collections/ABCM. This Abilene Library Consortium digital repository preserves and displays valuable resources. Research can find anything from works of art to videos.

A search on the Walter Collins name will bring up several articles dealing with the famous Cattle Exchange Saloon Shootout and its aftermath.

Whether you prefer to browse our shelves in person or like the immediacy of e-books, the Abilene Public Library has many titles and resources specifically focused on the history of the Texas Frontier.

Visit us to see for yourself and visit one of the Frontier Texas! Live reenactments and enjoy the performance of our very own Tony and all of the talented actors.
