LANCASTER – It was clear from the start that Lancaster had the upper hand over the understaffed Whitehall team on Wednesday.

The Golden Gales scored four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of three mistakes, and added seven more runs in the second inning to take full control of the game.

For the game, the Rams made four mistakes, went eight batters, and four were pitches. Lancaster took full advantage and scored a 13-0 non-conference win at Beavers Field in five innings. He improved his record in the young season to 2-0.

Anytime a game gets out of hand prematurely, a head coach is just looking to keep his players focused and make sure they are doing what they should be doing. In other words, don’t downplay your competition.

“It was good for our boys to get out of here and do their business in a game like this,” said Lancaster coach Corey Conn. “We got up early and did what we were supposed to do. It’s difficult in games like this, but I was proud of these guys, mostly because they’re such a young team, but they kept their focus for the most part and did the little things well. “

One of the bright spots was the pitching of Senior Trevor Roby, who was making his first career college start. He excelled in three innings, surrendering only one hit and striking eight.

Conn was impressed with how calm Roby was for his first start and how he switched pitches to keep the Whitehall batters off balance. Roby knocked out the side in the second and third innings.

“It was his first time at Beavers Field in a varsity game and he came out and threw strikes and we talk about that all the time just to throw strikes and make your defense work for you,” Conn said. “If he can throw punches like that and mix three different pitches, he’ll be tough on the clubs. He did a good job. “

Mason Henson threw the last two innings and he was just as effective. He gave up one hit and knocked out two.

While Roby and Henson did their work on the hill, Lancaster’s offense went to work.

The first four hits in the Gales line-up scored a goal in the first inning. Kyle Garber led with a triple and Noah Blecha followed with a double. Tony Falvo, Riley Poston and Henson all made infield errors, Keaton Jacobs was hit by a pitch, and Roby left to explain the four runs.

Lancaster put 13 batters on the plate in the second inning. The big hits came from Garber, who doubled two runs home, and Roby also had a double to knock in two runs.

Garber ended the day in a 2v3 win while Blecha was 2v2, reaching base every four times he fought. He also left and was hit by bad luck and scored three runs.

“We’ve been working on the little things over the last few days of practice, like getting a good secondary lead from second, good lead from third and getting back to a fair area,” said Conn. “It’s really little things that we want to make sure that we move from practice to play. We just want to make sure we get the little things right because those little things bring us a game. Those are the things that you are looking for in a game like this. “

The Gales will be back in action on Friday when they host Utica in a non-conference at Beavers Field and on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Canal Winchester.
