Herd immunity is “a prerequisite for restarting tourism” in Mauritius and authorities are confident of achieving the target within the allotted timeframe, a government agency said Tuesday.

The gradual easing of travel restrictions is expected “from late June 2021” as authorities believe the vaccination campaign is “on track” and the country will achieve herd immunity, according to a statement from the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority ( MTPA).

“A threshold of 700,000 vaccinated people has been set for the country to achieve herd immunity,” the agency said.

It is said that 117,323 people – 17% of the target audience – have received their first dose of vaccine since Mauritius launched its vaccination campaign on Jan. 26.

“Mauritius has ensured an adequate supply of vaccines to the authorities in order to maintain the vaccination rate,” the statement quoted the government spokesman Dr. Zouberr Joomaye.

Mauritius has so far reported 850 COVID-19 cases, including 10 deaths and 592 recoveries, according to data from the US-based John Hopkins University.
