EDGERTON – Montpelier’s ACME baseball team had just seven hits in their opener, but the Locomotives used a lot of patience on the plate to push the barrels across.

Montpelier used 14 Edgerton walks to score 17 runs – including the last 13 – to win the first game 17-4 in five innings on Tuesday at Bob Peverly Field in Edgerton. The Locos ended the sweep with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

After Edgerton scored three runs in the lower portion of the second inning to tie the game at 4-4, Montpelier took control with a third inning of seven runs. Landon Fackler smacked left field with a two-out, two-run single to score Ayden Santos and Nathan Rummel to put the Locos 8-4, and Trent Thorp followed with an RBI double left to bring Jamison Grime home and the advantage to 9-4.

Santos pulled a base-loaded walk to meet Gavin Zyjewski at the start of the inning, and Easten Richmond hit a pass to make it 6-4. Fackler crossed home plate after a pass and Zyjewski scored after a mistake as the lead grew to 11-4.

Thorp added an RBI single in the fourth inning to make it 14-4, while Heath Frantom broke into an RBI outfield pick to extend the lead to 15-4 in the fifth. Thorp, who ended up with three RBIs, two hits, and a run, pulled a base-loaded walk to bring Santos home from Montpelier for the final run.

Fackler scored two hits, three RBIs and two runs; Santos had three runs and two RBIs; and Richmond scored three runs for the Locos. Rummel (RBI, two runs), Garrett Girrell (run) and Zyjewski (run) each achieved individual scores, while Grime and David Bowman each scored two runs.

Edgerton, who scored eight goals, took the early lead. Corey Everetts got to the start of the game by mistake and scored three punches later on a throwing mistake to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Caden Franz drew a base-loaded walk in the second inning to score Cooper Everett’s, formerly single in the frame, and reduce Montpelier’s lead to 4-2.

Corey Everetts double-run into left field to meet Elijah Martin and Isaiah Fry to top the game 4-4.

Kadyn Picillo and Fry both finished with two singles while Caden Leppelmeier and Jayson Schliesser were both for the Bulldogs singles.
