LOS ANGELES — No. 1 UCLA (18-1) used an eight-goal outburst in the second quarter to cruise past No. 11 UC Santa Barbara (10-11), 12-7, on Thursday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The eight goals by the Bruins were the most in any quarter this season and more than UCLA scored in its earlier win over the Gauchos in the opening weekend (the Bruins defeated UCSB 7-6 on Sept. 3). It was also the most goals by the Bruins in any quarter since UCLA dumped nine on Penn State Behrend in the opening quarter of last year’s first-round MPSF Tournament win (Nov. 19, 2021). UCLA improved to 109-17-1 all-time in the series history against UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins have posted more all-time wins against the Gauchos than any other team in program history. The Bruins have won the last 16 meetings.

Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw at the end of the first period, but then came the Bruins’ offensive explosion. The Bruins had six players score in the game, led by redshirt sophomore Gianpiero Di Martire’s season- and career-high-tying four goals. super senior Jake Cavano added a hat trick for UCLA and junior attacker Makoto Kenney score twice.

Senior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering 12 saves, three steals, and one assist, while allowing seven goals.

Ryan Brosnan, Tommy Hawkins, and James Oriskovich led the Gauchos with two goals apiece while former Bruin Danny Roland had 14 saves while surrendering 12 goals to UCLA.

PERIOD ONE

> Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the first period.
> Gianpiero Di Martire opened the scoring with a cross-cage bar-in shot (7:18) to put UCLA up 1-0.
> UCSB scored the only other goal of the period (6:51) to end the first period all tied up at 1-1.

PERIOD TWO

> UCLA outscored UCSB, 8-3, to take a 9-4 lead heading into the break.
> Seniors Andy Rodgers opened the scoring (7:26) in the second off an assist from sophomore Chase Doddbut UCSB answered with a score (6:56) to tie it at 2-2.
> Kenney scored his first (6:11) off a pass from Rodgers, but the Gauchos countered for a score (5:32) to knot things up at 3-3.
> The Bruins then reeled off three straight scores to take a 6-3 lead with Cavano starting the streak with a goal off an assist from fellow super senior Evan Rosenfeld (4:57).
> Red shirt junior Jack Larsen followed with a strike from the front court (4:18) off a pass from senior Tommy Gruwell. Then Kenney set up Di Martire for his second score on a power play (3:29) and the Bruins had the Gauchos doubled up at 6-3.
> After a goal by UCSB (2:17), the Bruins scored another three unanswered goals to close out the period. Red shirt freshman Grant Loth took a pass from Gruwell at set and scored (1:47) followed by a second score from Cavano (1:11) on a counter and off a feed from Maurizi. Dodd then set up Cavano, who completed his hat trick at the buzzer to end the scoring in the first half.

PERIOD THREE

> Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the third period as UCLA would take a 10-5 lead heading into the fourth.
> After a goal by UCSB (4:49), Dodd registered his third assist of the game when Kenney scored his second (1:13) to end the scoring in the third.

PERIOD FOUR

> The two teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the fourth quarter to provide the 12-7 final.
> The Gauchos got on the board first (6:02) in the fourth, but Di Martire completed his hat trick (2:05) off the fourth assist from Dodd to push the lead to 11-6.
> After UCSB scored a power play goal (1:39), Di Martire ended the scoring with his fourth goal of the game off the fifth assist for Dodd (0:19).

UP NEXT

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1:00 pm at home against No. 7UC Davis.
